Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Prevost, has expressed deep sorrow over the recent surge in violent attacks across parts of Nigeria, describing the incidents as alarming and urging authorities to intensify efforts to protect lives.
The Pope made the remarks in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, offering prayers for victims of terrorism and communal violence following deadly attacks reported in Kwara, Katsina and Benue states.
“It is with sorrow and concern that I learned of the recent attacks against various communities in Nigeria leading to a heavy loss of life,” the pontiff wrote.
“I express my prayerful closeness to all the victims of violence and terrorism. I likewise hope that the competent authorities will continue to work with determination to ensure the safety and protection of the life of every citizen.”
His comments come amid renewed security concerns after a series of attacks left dozens dead, homes destroyed and residents displaced in several parts of the country.
In Kwara State, gunmen launched a deadly assault on Woro village shortly after military operations were reportedly carried out in the area against what authorities described as terrorist elements. During the attack, shops were set ablaze and the residence of a traditional ruler was torched, forcing residents to flee into nearby bushes for safety.
On the same day, suspected bandits attacked Doma community in Tafoki Ward of Faskari Local Government Area, Katsina State, where more than 20 people were reportedly killed. Witnesses said the attackers stormed the community in large numbers, opened fire indiscriminately and caused heavy casualties before escaping.
In Benue State, security operatives repelled a separate attack by suspected bandits in Anwase village, Kwande Local Government Area. Although no casualties were officially recorded, several houses were destroyed during the invasion.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Udeme Edet, said security forces responded swiftly to the attack.
“It is true there was an attack on Anwase, but our gallant officers repelled them and there was no casualty,” Edet said.
However, residents reported that the attackers invaded the community around noon on Friday and set multiple homes on fire before being driven away.
