Reggae Legend Jimmy Cliff Passes Away at 81

Reggae icon Jimmy Cliff, one of the genre’s most influential and beloved figures, passed away on Monday at the age of 81.

A global star since the 1960s, Cliff played a monumental role in bringing Jamaican music to the world with timeless hits such as Wonderful World, Beautiful People and You Can Get It If You Really Want. He also gained international acclaim for his role as a rebellious musician in the 1972 classic The Harder They Come—a film widely credited with introducing reggae to American audiences.

His wife, Latifa Chambers, announced his passing on the late legend’s official Instagram account, revealing that he died following a seizure and subsequent pneumonia.

“It’s with profound sadness that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over… To all his fans around the world, please know that your support was his strength throughout his whole career,” she wrote, signing the message along with their children, Lilty and Aken.

Born James Chambers in 1948 as the eighth of nine children in rural poverty in St. James, Jamaica, Cliff’s extraordinary journey began at his local church, where he started singing at age six. By 14, he moved to Kingston and adopted the stage name “Cliff” to symbolize the heights he aimed to reach.

He achieved early success with Hurricane Hattie, which topped Jamaican charts, and later moved to London in 1965 to work with Island Records. His breakthrough came with 1969’s Wonderful World, Beautiful People and the powerful anti-war track Vietnam, which Bob Dylan once hailed as “the best protest song ever written.”

Cliff’s international stardom soared after The Harder They Come, which he later described as the film that “opened the door for Jamaica.”

Throughout his illustrious career, he earned multiple accolades, including Grammy Awards for Cliff Hanger (1985) and Rebirth (2012), and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.

Jimmy Cliff leaves behind a monumental legacy that helped shape reggae into a global force.
