A Russian attack on Wednesday set fire to a holiday camp in Ukraine’s central Zaporizhzhia region, killing two people and injuring at least 12 others, including four children, according to local authorities.

Emergency services released images of firefighters battling flames in single-storey cottages, with the wounded and dead seen lying on blood-stained ground.

Zaporizhzhia, a frontline region claimed by Russia, has seen a rise in deadly strikes in recent weeks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack, saying, “There’s no military sense in this attack. It’s just cruelty to scare people.” He added that hundreds in the region were left without electricity following related Russian strikes.

In a separate incident, a man born in 1959 was killed in Pokrovsk, a key logistics hub in the Donetsk region, also claimed by Russia.

Moscow has not commented on the latest strikes. While Russia continues its invasion of Ukraine—launched in early 2022—it denies targeting civilians.
