Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has acknowledged the internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), responding to President Bola Tinubu’s remarks about the state of Nigeria’s opposition parties.
During his Democracy Day address on Thursday, President Tinubu mocked the disarray among opposition parties, saying,
“It is a joy to see the opposition in disarray. I won’t help you fix it—do your best to put your house in order.”
He also denied claims that his administration was attempting to create a one-party state through orchestrated defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking to journalists shortly after the ceremony at the National Assembly, Saraki admitted that the PDP is indeed dealing with internal challenges. However, he emphasized that the party is committed to resolving its issues independently.
“We must take the President at his word,” Saraki said. “He said he supports a multi-party system and is not aiming for a one-party state. That’s reassuring. Now it’s up to us in the opposition to organise ourselves and put our house in order.”
Saraki added that efforts are underway to unify the party and bring members together, stressing that opposition parties must focus on self-correction and reorganisation rather than expecting external support.
“He won’t help us, and we’re not asking for help. We’ll sort ourselves out,” he concluded.
