President Bola Tinubu has extended warm birthday wishes to Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka on the occasion of his 91st birthday, calling him a timeless source of inspiration for Nigeria and the world.

In a statement released on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised the iconic playwright, poet, and essayist for his lifelong contributions to literature, human rights, and nation-building.

“President Bola Tinubu extends his heartfelt congratulations to Professor Wole Soyinka, the globally revered literary icon and Nobel Laureate, as he turns 91 today,” the statement read. “Professor Soyinka, a celebrated literary figure, activist, and public intellectual, is renowned for his remarkable creativity — evident in his plays, poems, essays, memoirs, and other works.”

The President highlighted Soyinka’s influential role in education, cultural diplomacy, and Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement, describing him as a towering figure whose legacy continues to inspire generations across the globe.

“President Tinubu acknowledges the immense contributions of Professor Soyinka — the first African to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1986 — to national development, the human rights struggle, and cultural discourse,” the statement continued. “He remains a profound source of motivation for Nigerians, especially young writers who have gone on to gain recognition at home and abroad.”

Reflecting on their personal connection, President Tinubu praised Soyinka’s enduring patriotism and his steadfast dedication to the country’s progress.
