President Bola Tinubu has said that Nigeria’s history would have been incomplete had he failed to win the 2023 presidential election.
Tinubu made the remark on Sunday, July 20, during the 8th-day Fidau prayer held in honour of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.
The respected monarch, who passed away at the age of 91, was one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers, having ascended the throne in 1960. His death came just hours after that of former President Muhammadu Buhari, his longtime friend.
Addressing attendees at the prayer, President Tinubu praised the late Awujale’s influence and recalled the role he played in his political journey.
“He encouraged me to run and assured me of victory,” Tinubu said. “Our history would not have been completed carefully and richly if I had failed in the last election.”
The president added that his success in the election was due in part to the support and blessing of the late monarch.
