Victor Boniface Reveals Why He Chose Bayer Leverkusen Over Premier League Offers

Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface has revealed that his career decisions are heavily influenced by a club’s playing style and pressure environment, stating that he deliberately avoids joining struggling teams.

Speaking on a podcast published Saturday by Webek Studios, Boniface said he’s never played for a club battling poor form.

“No, I don’t think so,” he said when asked if he had ever played for a struggling team.
“Since I started my professional career, every team I’ve played for usually finishes first or second.”

He emphasized that he carefully evaluates a team’s playing philosophy and pressure levels before signing.

“Before I make a transfer, I always check what kind of football they play. Does it fit my style? Is it a team with too much pressure? Some players can’t perform under pressure,” he explained.

Boniface also revealed he had several offers, including some from England, after a standout season in Belgium—but chose Bayer Leverkusen because of their system.

“I had some really good offers from England—great money, great packages—but their style didn’t suit me,” he said.

He stressed the importance of being in the right setup to perform well:

“Put me in a possession-based team, and I’ll give you everything. That’s where you’ll see the best of me. I want to be at a club where I can be the number one option.”
