A 120-year-old woman has been laid to rest in a customised dolphin-shaped casket in Oboro community, located in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State, in a burial ceremony that has drawn widespread attention.
The unique send-off has sparked conversations both within the local community and across social media, with many describing it as a powerful tribute to a life devoted to the river.
According to community members, the late woman spent her entire life as a fisherwoman — the only trade she was known for. In honour of her lifelong dedication to fishing, her family chose a dolphin-shaped casket as a symbolic representation of her identity and enduring connection to the waterways that sustained her and her community.
Residents explained that the decision was intentional and deeply meaningful, aimed at celebrating her legacy and telling the story of her life in a way that reflects her contribution to the local fishing heritage.
For many in the riverine community, the distinctive casket was more than a design choice — it was a final salute to a woman whose life revolved around the waters she called home.
