Season 7 contestant Cierra Ortega has abruptly left the Love Island USA villa following the resurfacing of alleged past racial slurs, sparking online backlash and a wave of public scrutiny.
The 25-year-old’s departure was announced during Sunday night’s Episode 30, with narrator Iain Stirling simply stating that Ortega had exited for “personal reasons.” No additional details were shared during the broadcast.
Ortega’s sudden exit left fellow islander Nic Vansteenberghe single and emotional. In a confessional, he admitted feeling “lost,” calling Ortega his “strongest connection” on the show.
Her departure comes as past offensive remarks, allegedly made by Ortega, resurfaced on social media. Fans quickly demanded her removal, drawing parallels to the earlier exit of contestant Yulissa Escoba, who left under similar circumstances last month.
Neither NBC nor Peacock has issued a statement. Ortega herself has remained silent, but her parents released a message via her Instagram Stories, urging compassion and stating that their daughter has not yet had a chance to address the controversy.
“We know our daughter. We know her heart,” they wrote. “When she returns, we believe she’ll face this with honesty, growth, and grace.”
They acknowledged the importance of accountability but condemned the wave of online hate, adding, “No one deserves that kind of hate, no matter what mistake they’ve made.”
Former islander Bella-A Walker, who exited the villa after Ortega’s arrival, also addressed the situation. While denouncing racism, she urged viewers to avoid cruelty, saying, “Please think twice before leaving unkind comments.”
Ortega’s social media handler, MJ Hedderman, shared that they had stepped back from managing her account amid the controversy, stating, “I do not condone racism, bigotry, or hate in any way. This situation has been really difficult, and I’m still processing everything.”
Host Ariana Madix also came under fire from fans demanding she speak out. Responding online, she shot back: “Not silent. You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
