Manchester United have reportedly reached an agreement to sign Cameroon international Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford in a deal worth an initial £65 million ($87 million), as manager Ruben Amorim accelerates his overhaul of the club’s underperforming attack.
Mbeumo, 25, caught Amorim’s eye after a stellar 2024/25 campaign in which he netted 20 goals in 38 Premier League appearances. His performances had also drawn interest from Tottenham Hotspur, now managed by his former Brentford boss Thomas Frank. However, United’s third and improved offer eventually sealed the deal, after two previous bids were rejected.
The agreement includes an additional £6 million in performance-related add-ons, potentially bringing the total value to £71 million. Mbeumo is scheduled to undergo a medical ahead of United’s pre-season tour of the United States, which begins Tuesday.
Once the move is finalised, Mbeumo will become United’s third major signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Wolves forward Matheus Cunha and Paraguayan teenage defender Diego Leon.
United’s need for attacking reinforcements comes after a dismal season that saw them finish 15th in the Premier League— their worst league standing since the 1973/74 campaign — and suffer a lacklustre 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final.
Amorim is said to have lost patience with the club’s current forward options. Strikers Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee struggled for consistency, while Alejandro Garnacho has reportedly been told to find a new club. Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho are both expected to depart after loan spells at Aston Villa and Chelsea, respectively.
Despite missing out on Champions League qualification — a setback projected to cost the club at least £70 million in revenue — United have pressed ahead with their summer rebuild. Amorim already sanctioned a £62.5 million move for Cunha earlier in the window.
Mbeumo, known for his pace, versatility, and sharp eye for goal, is expected to bring dynamism and creativity to United’s frontline. Comfortable on either wing or in central attacking roles, he has proven to be one of the Premier League’s most reliable forwards.
Since joining Brentford from French side Troyes in 2019, Mbeumo has scored 70 goals and contributed 51 assists in 242 appearances across all competitions. He played a key role in Brentford’s promotion to the Premier League in 2021 and was instrumental in their 10th-place finish last season.
Now set for the biggest move of his career, Mbeumo is poised to become a central figure in Amorim’s ambitious rebuild at Old Trafford.
