Many Feared Dead, Others Injured As Herdsmen Attack Yelewata Community

Tragedy struck Yelewata on Friday night as suspected armed herdsmen launched a deadly attack at around 10:00 p.m., leaving several residents dead and many others injured.

Early reports, received by 4:00 a.m. Saturday, indicate that at least 16 individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries. However, the exact number of fatalities remains unconfirmed as authorities continue their investigation and gather information from the affected area.

In response to distress calls from the community, operatives of the Nigerian Army and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were deployed to the scene. Tragically, while en route, the team was ambushed in Daudu, resulting in the death of two soldiers and one NSCDC officer.

“These brave men paid the ultimate price in service to our people. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten,” a community source said, mourning the fallen security personnel.

Survivors of the attack are currently receiving treatment at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) in Makurdi. Medical officials have issued urgent calls for blood donations to aid the victims in critical condition.

Citizens and humanitarian organizations have also been urged to provide immediate assistance, especially in the form of medical support and blood donations to save lives.

“My heartfelt condolences go to the families of the victims, especially our fallen heroes in uniform,” a concerned resident said, while refraining from sharing graphic images out of respect for the victims and the community.
