Actor Mel Gibson, 69, and screenwriter Rosalind Ross, 35, have ended their relationship after nine years together.
In a joint statement released on Tuesday, December 30, the former couple said that while the separation is difficult, their focus remains on family. “Although it’s sad to end this chapter in our lives, we are blessed with a beautiful son and will continue to be the best parents possible,” they said.
Gibson and Ross, who reportedly parted ways quietly about a year ago, plan to continue co-parenting their eight-year-old son, Lars. The pair first met through mutual friends in 2014 and began dating shortly afterward. In 2016, reports emerged that they were expecting their first child together.
Their son was born in 2017, just days before Gibson received an Academy Award nomination for Best Director for his 2016 film Hacksaw Ridge. At the time, Gibson described the moment as especially meaningful, saying nothing compared to hearing the Oscar nominations while holding his newborn son.
Although they largely kept their relationship private, Gibson and Ross made several public appearances together over the years. They walked the red carpet at the Oscars in 2017, following their debut as a couple at the 69th Cannes Film Festival the year before. In 2024, Gibson was also joined by their son at a screening of his film Monster Summer.
In January 2025, the family suffered a major loss when their $14.5 million Malibu home was destroyed in the Los Angeles wildfires. Speaking days later, Gibson said the safety of his loved ones mattered most, noting that everyone close to him was unharmed.
Gibson is the father of eight other children from previous relationships. He shares seven children with his former wife Robyn Moore, to whom he was married from 1980 to 2011, and also has a 16-year-old daughter, Lucia, with former partner Oksana Grigorieva.
