A nurse has been sentenced to prison after engaging in a sexual relationship with a patient and later falsely accusing him of sexual assault.
Melissa Knutson was found guilty of misconduct in public office and obstructing an officer following an investigation into her conduct while working for the Monroe County Drug Court in 2022.
According to prosecutors, Knutson had repeated sexual encounters with a patient who was participating in the drug court programme. Her role involved administering Vivitrol, a medication used to help individuals recovering from substance abuse.
Authorities began investigating after concerns were raised about her behaviour. When questioned, Knutson initially alleged that the patient had sexually assaulted her.
She claimed she had not reported the supposed assault earlier because she feared the patient might harm her or her family.
However, investigators later uncovered text messages from the patient that contradicted her account. Prosecutors said the messages indicated that Knutson had initiated the relationship and even suggested she would deny everything if the situation was eventually discovered.
Faced with the evidence, Knutson later admitted that she fabricated the assault allegation in an attempt to avoid the consequences of her actions.
District Attorney Kevin Croninger condemned the misconduct, stating that the nurse had abused her professional position and the trust placed in her.
“The harm caused by Ms. Knutson was deep and significant. Not only did she violate the sacred trust between a patient and a nurse, but she compounded that by falsely accusing the patient of sexual assault,” Croninger said in a statement.
He also noted that the situation was particularly serious because the patient was participating in a drug court programme, making him especially vulnerable.
Knutson was ultimately sentenced to 18 months in prison followed by two years of extended supervision. Authorities say the case highlights the serious consequences of abusing professional responsibility and making false criminal accusations.
