Ondo Athletes Aim for Gold Rush at Niger Delta Sports Festivall

Athletes selected to represent Ondo State at the second edition of the Niger Delta Games have expressed strong confidence as they conclude preparations ahead of the competition in Edo State.

The contingent wrapped up the final phase of its closed camping in Akure on Tuesday, with athletes describing the training environment as disciplined, focused and highly motivating. The Games are slated to officially open on Friday, February 20, while participating teams from the nine Niger Delta states are expected to arrive a day earlier, on Thursday, February 19.

Several athletes said the intensity of training has sharpened their readiness for competition. Footballers Ola Gabriel Temitope and Olamide Agbajeola noted that the team has already transitioned fully into competitive mode, stressing that their objective is to secure victories for the state.

Temitope praised the level of organisation and support from the state’s liaison committee, adding that the demanding training schedule has helped build confidence within the squad. He said the players are determined to make a strong statement, particularly in football, which he described as the flagship event of the festival.

Agbajeola echoed similar sentiments, explaining that the camping exercise enabled the team to bond quickly and remain motivated by the honour of representing Ondo State on a regional stage.

From the aquatics team, swimmer Mojisola Giwa said morale among athletes remains high, attributing their optimism to improved fitness levels and stronger teamwork developed during camp. She expressed belief that Ondo State has what it takes to compete favourably against other states and return with medals.

The Niger Delta Games will feature competitions in 16 sporting events and is expected to showcase top talents from across the oil-producing region. The festival is sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission and organised by Dunamis-Icon Limited.
