Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in London on the directive of President Bola Tinubu, following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Shettima touched down in the UK on Monday morning, accompanied by the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila. Upon arrival, they were received by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum.
The Vice President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Stanley Nkwocha, confirmed the development in a statement released Monday morning.
President Tinubu had earlier announced the passing of his predecessor, who died in London on Sunday at approximately 4:30 p.m. local time. In response, the President directed Shettima and Gbajabiamila to travel to the UK to oversee the arrangements for returning Buhari’s remains to Nigeria.
Buhari, aged 82, served as Nigeria’s elected President from 2015 to 2023, and earlier as military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985.
As a mark of respect, President Tinubu has ordered all national flags to be flown at half-staff. Buhari’s burial is scheduled to take place on Monday in his hometown of Daura, in accordance with Islamic rites.
