President Tinubu Sacks Kayode Egbetokun As Inspector-General Of Police

President Bola Tinubu has removed Kayode Egbetokun from his position as Inspector-General of Police, sources within the presidency confirmed on Tuesday.

According to presidential aides, Tinubu asked Egbetokun to step aside during a meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Monday.

“Yes. Egbetokun is gone,” one aide said when asked to comment. Another noted that a formal statement is being prepared and will be released shortly.

Efforts to get confirmation from the Police Force spokesman, Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful, and presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga did not respond to calls.

Sources in the police hierarchy suggested that a successor may have already been identified. One anonymous source revealed that Tunji Disu has been contacted regarding the position, though official confirmation is still awaited.

Egbetokun was appointed as IG on June 19, 2023, by President Tinubu. His tenure became controversial in 2024 when he reached the mandatory retirement age of 60 on September 4. However, his service was extended following amendments to the Police Act.
