Russia Sends Warships And Submarine To Escort Oil Tanker As U.S. Seizes It In Atlantic

Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly ordered the deployment of naval vessels, including a submarine, to escort a sanctioned oil tanker being pursued by United States forces in the Atlantic Ocean, escalating tensions between Moscow and Washington

The vessel at the center of the standoff, formerly known as Bella 1 and now renamed Marinera, is accused by U.S. officials of being part of a so-called “shadow fleet” used to evade international sanctions and transport illicit oil linked to Russia, Iran and Venezuela. After evading a U.S. Coast Guard boarding attempt near Venezuela in December, the ship changed course, adopted a Russian flag and has moved northward through the North Atlantic as U.S. and allied forces track its progress.

According to reports, the Russian submarine and accompanying naval ships were dispatched to provide protection as the tanker sails toward Russian waters, a move that risks widening the geopolitical confrontation. Russian state media say the vessel is under Moscow’s protection, while U.S. officials say they are continuing surveillance and may pursue interception under an existing seizure order.

The proxy dispute over the Marinera follows a broader U.S. effort to enforce sanctions on Venezuelan oil exports, which has included blockades and attempted boardings of sanctioned tankers. For its part, Russia has expressed concern over U.S. actions, framing its naval escort as a response to what it deems disproportionate attention on a Russian-flagged vessel.

This evolving situation underscores rising maritime tensions tied to global oil sanctions and could have broader implications for U.S.–Russia relations.
