Rapper Sean Kingston has been sentenced to 42 months (3.5 years) in a U.S. federal prison after being convicted of wire fraud. The sentence was handed down on Friday, August 15, in a Florida courtroom.
Kingston and his mother, Janice Turner, were found guilty of defrauding businesses of over $1 million through false claims of payments for luxury items including jewelry and cars. While Turner was sentenced to five years back in March, Kingston’s sentence was less than the six-year maximum but more than the two to two-and-a-half years requested by his defense.
According to court documents, the duo claimed they made wire transfers to obtain high-end goods, but never completed the payments while keeping the items.
In addition to prison time, Kingston is required to repay his victims. His legal team has asked the court to consider home confinement after release so he can return to music and generate income for restitution.
Upon release, he will be placed under supervised probation, during which he must stay employed, submit to drug testing, and allow unannounced visits by his probation officer. He must also provide a DNA sample.
A court hearing on the restitution repayment plan is scheduled for October 16.
