Two killed as container trucks collide on Oshodi–Apapa Expressway in Lagos

Two people lost their lives in the early hours of Wednesday following a collision between two fully loaded 40-foot container trucks on the Cele inward section of the Oshodi–Apapa Expressway in Lagos.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed that one of the victims was a truck driver who became trapped in his cab after the crash around Mile 2 and was later pronounced dead. A second victim, described as a suspected miscreant, was discovered beneath one of the trucks during recovery operations, with officials saying the circumstances surrounding his presence were unclear.

Emergency responders from LASTMA carried out rescue and recovery efforts with technical support from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, while officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Ilasa Division, secured the scene. The bodies were subsequently evacuated by the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit, allowing traffic to be gradually restored along the busy freight corridor.

LASTMA said the incident has been handed over to the Ilasa Police Division for investigation. Its General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the victims’ families and warned operators of articulated vehicles to observe speed limits and safety regulations, especially during nighttime operations. Motorists were also urged to drive cautiously and report hazards promptly.
