Victor Boniface set for knee surgery as injury troubles persist

Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface is set to undergo surgery to address a persistent knee injury, according to reports from Germany.

The Nigeria international, currently on a season-long loan at Werder Bremen from Bayer Leverkusen, has struggled for fitness throughout the campaign. Boniface has managed just 326 minutes of action this season and is yet to complete a full 90 minutes due to the ongoing issue.

German outlet BILD reports that Bayer Leverkusen’s medical team has now recommended surgery after the injury failed to improve. The problem was initially picked up during a training session in early December and was thought to be minor, but the discomfort has persisted.

Discussions are reportedly ongoing between Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes and Werder Bremen’s Clemens Fritz to reach a joint decision on the next steps before Christmas.

Boniface, who has previously suffered two cruciate ligament injuries, could miss the remainder of the season if he proceeds with another operation.
