The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled a supplementary election for the Kaura-Namoda South Constituency in Zamfara State on Thursday, August 21.

This decision follows the declaration of the recent by-election as inconclusive by the Returning Officer, Professor Lawal Sa’adu of the Federal University Gusau. He explained that the margin between the leading and trailing parties was smaller than the number of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) collected in polling units where the election was cancelled—necessitating a supplementary vote.

According to Professor Sa’adu, the affected polling units have a total of 5,446 registered voters, with 3,265 PVCs collected. In the initial results, the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured 7,001 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) garnered 5,339 votes—a margin of 1,662 votes.

Because this margin is less than the number of collected PVCs in the cancelled polling units, the election could not be concluded.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting held in Gusau on Tuesday, the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Mahmuda Isah, announced the new date and assured political parties and voters that all necessary preparations are being made to ensure a smooth and credible supplementary election.

INEC also urged political parties, security agencies, and other stakeholders to collaborate with the commission to ensure the successful conduct of the election on August 21
